NOSTALGIA

This is something I’ve long wanted to do –
To sit down and write this letter to you.
To thank you all for my childhood years.
So full of memories (of joy, and tears!)
Our own three children are growing up tall
And it’s with pleasure for them I recall
The places we lived; the things we did;
The people I knew in our own neighbourhood.
 
Can you call to mind the old UHS ground
Where Toppie and his goats were oft to be found,
By venturesome children, greedily seeking
Sweet, juicy grapes – just there for the picking?
Now there are all those beautiful fields,
And a hostel too –and a swimming pool!
But for present pupils to have all this,
Mac used to have us in long, long lines
Pulling out clover, and picking up stones!
 
In Sub A we had Mss Rex – so tall.
In that cupboard of hers we had a ball.
Mrs. Pohl was our joy in Std. 1.
And with old Miss Walton we’d lots of fun.
How much we loved Miss Nash in 111;
(But Miss Biggs didn’t have much love for me).
Our Std. V class was so very large,
So off to the hall, with Hoffie in charge!

Living in the Grove!  How tremendous!
A huge house – a garden stupendous!
A mother who created a paradise there.
A father whose laughter and love I still hear.
With friends all over on bikes we went.
This childhood from Heaven truly was sent.
So few of us are left from those years,
But I assure you I shed so very few tears
As I am extremely fortunate
To remember so many and much to this date.
 
I think back to Nicols – and Uncle John
Who gave so much to children then.
And even the dentist held no fear
As Uncle Louis was so dear
To all of us who ever went there.
I even found a small photograph
Of some of us on Piet’s donkey cart.
His produce he used to hawk in the street
And a ride on his car was a joyous treat!

How well I remember the night Mike and I
Decided avo’s our folks weren’t to buy.
We quite honestly felt Mr. Rubidge’s tree
Had far more fruit even he could consume.
So we scaled up, ever so high
To pick the largest we could espy.
Our parents gravely accepted our gift –
But the following day we nearly had a fit
As Mr. Rubidge himself at our house appeared
Bearing more avo’s – not a whip as we had feared.
 
My husband takes delight in teasing me;
Says God has forgotten that part of the country!
I don’t feel a  “stranger” can understand
Our special love for our part of the land!
Bruce could partake in a slice of this
When Archdeacon Child joined us in wedded bliss.
Now even he has memories too,
Of the Gem of the Karoo – and some of you.
 
There are so many people, places and things
I’d like to mention here, as my memory brings
Everything vividly back to me
But space is limited, so you see,
I’d like to say, I love you all
And thank you for what I can recall.
Your memories to you may be even better.
But rest assured – you’ll always remain    ….
